Combivent is a metered-dose inhaler medication, which is used to prevent bronchospasm in individuals, who are suffering from COPD. It is formulated by using two bronchodilators i.e. Albuterol and Ipratropium. These are used in combination with other drugs.
How this drug works as bronchodilator?
Albuterol and Ipratropium are two synthetic compounds, which constitutes Combivent. Albuterol is an agonist of beta (2)-adrenergic receptors. It stimulates these receptors and provides relaxation of bronchial muscles. In this way, it acts as a bronchodilator. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic drug. It inhibits the muscarinic receptors and provides dilation of bronchioles. In this way it also acts as bronchodilator. By above two mentioned mechanism Combivent inhaler helps in the management of bronchospasm.
Who should not take this drug?
It is contraindicated in some individuals and can cause severe harmful effects in these individuals. So they should not take this medication. These include the individuals, who are hypersensitive to Albuterol or Ipratropium or any other ingredients of this medication, should not use this medication.
What other drugs will affect Combivent?
The therapeutic action of this medication is altered by some other medicines, so the individual should avoid taking these drugs in combination with this medication. These drugs include anti-depressant, bladder medication, diuretics, diet pills and blood pressure drugs.

You should store this drug away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture at a temperature of about 250C.
How to use Combivent inhaler?
This medication is used by the mouth by inhalation method. The dose of this drug depends on the medical condition of the individual. Usually an adult individual should take two inhalations of this medication four times in a day. It can be increased but should not be more than 12 inhalations in 24 hours.
What to do in case of overdose?
This medication can cause severe harmful effects, if used in overdose. Some sign of overdose include severe headache, fainting, weak pulse and slow breathing. In case of overdose, immediately contact with your health care professional.
What to do in case of missed dose?
The individual should take the missed dose of this medication when remembers, but if the individual remember it at the time of next dose, then go for next dose by skipping the missed one.

The use of this medication may cause some side effects in some individuals, which do not require any medical treatment. These include mild headache, chest pain, cold symptoms and wheezing.
What are safety points about Combivent?
